Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a domain name?
The best domain names are short, memorable, and easy to spell and pronounce. Your domain name is part of your overall brand, so you want to make sure it either matches or complements your business name in some way. You’ll also want to consider SEO (search engine optimization). Adding in keywords that describe your business (for example, “flowers” or “photography”) can help signal to search engines what your website is doing. But beware of cramming in too many keywords—doing so often comes off as spammy and creates a domain name that’s too long to remember.
What’s a TLD?
TLD stands for Top-Level Domain. The TLD is everything that follows the final dot in a domain name. So in registeredagentsinc.com, .com is the TLD. Other TLDs you may recognize are .net, .co, .org, and .edu.
Should my business name match my domain name?
Maybe! This is a tricky question. Some business names make for great domain names, while others don’t. If your business name is short, catchy, and original, then yes—secure it as a domain name! But if your business name is long, tricky to spell, or difficult to remember, then you should find a domain name that complements the business in some way. For example, if your business name is Bartholomew’s Rare Books Emporium LLC, a better domain name might be bartsbooks.com.
How do I know if my LLC name is available?
It’s true that if your desired business name is taken in your state, you won’t be able to use it (or anything confusingly close to it). So before you make any big decisions, try conducting a quick search on the Secretary of State’s business database in your state. Every state has one. Type in your desired business name and see what pops up. If there’s nothing close, you’re probably safe to use it. If you’re in doubt, you can call up your state’s Secretary of State’s office to ask.
What’s a registered agent anyway?
Having a registered agent is a legal requirement for all businesses, but a good registered agent does much more than check a box. At Registered Agents Inc, we aim to support our clients for the life of their business, providing tools and privacy protection throughout your journey. If the state or the legal system needs to get in touch with your business, they’ll deliver the documents to your registered agent (sometimes in person). This means that your registered agent must be present at a physical location in your state during normal business hours, and agree to accept and forward this important paperwork to you right away.
Should I get a domain name before I name my business?
Ideally, you’d secure both a business name and a domain name around the same time. However, we know that’s not always possible. If you find a business name that’s available in your state, act fast. Some states allow you to reserve the name for a small fee—a smart move if you’re not ready to form your LLC yet. You can always play with extensions and variations to find a domain name that’ll suit your business name. The state, however, won’t allow you to make small changes to an already-registered business name to make it unique.
Why do I need an LLC?
Forming an LLC comes with many perks—flexible taxation options, simple management structure—but the main reason people choose to form an LLC is the liability protection. If you’re selling goods and services without an entity, you’re a sole proprietor, and you’re legally considered one and the same as your business. If your business is sued, so are you. But if you have an LLC, there’s a legal separation between you and your business. This means that your personal assets (like your car, house, and the money in your personal bank account!) are off limits to creditors looking to settle business debts.
